Petrea Hansen-Adamidis

RP, RCAT, DTATI, BA

I believe deeply that we all have the means within us to live a creative and fulfilled life no matter what our past experiences or present challenges.

Pronouns: she/her

I am a registered psychotherapist (RP) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and a trained and registered art therapist (RCAT) with the Canadian Art Therapy Association. I graduated from the Toronto Art Therapy Institute in 1995 and have been working with children, adolescents, and adults ever since.

I have worked extensively in children’s mental health for over 24 years, including as a child and family therapist and expressive arts therapist at the Garry Hurvitz Centre for Community Mental Health at Sick Kids, formerly the Hincks Dellcrest Centre. My experience includes working as a trauma therapist, working on the infant and preschool team, and art therapy-based groups for anxiety. I believe that as parents we are all doing the best that we can in any one given moment.  I work with individual and family strengths to support the emotional health of parents, children, and adults whether there are challenges with mood, loss, trauma, anxiety, or behaviours.

My practice is grounded in a person-centred, relational, and strengths-based approach utilizing my training in Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), Brief therapy, relational based therapies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Trauma Focused therapy and expressive therapies such as art and play.

In individual, family, and parent therapy we explore your unique strengths and experiences in the context of your current circumstances.  We work together to discover and work through any blocks that may be getting in the way of growth.

Parenting is a tough job.  Just when we think we have figured out what to do or how to respond as a parent, things can shift, for many reasons.  Parent therapy is an opportunity to explore ways in which you can support healthy communication and growth with your child.  Ultimately, as a parent or caregiver, you are part of the solution to your child’s mental health.

Family therapy involves working with the whole family or several members of the family together to help improve communication and family relationships.  Sometimes parent-child dyads can use unique support.
